The year 2012 saw the triumph of cold reality over pie-in-the-sky dreams.
Barack Obama in 2008 won an election on an upbeat message of change in the hope that the first black president would mark a redemptive moment in American history. Four years later, the fantasies are gone. In continuing dismal economic times, Obama ran for re-election neither on his first-term achievements — Obamacare, bailouts, financial stimuli and Keynesian mega-deficits — nor on more utopian promises.

Long-time ABC News correspondent Sam Donaldson has a message for "The Tea Party." He wants them to know it isn´t their country anymore. That is what he said on the Chris Matthews Sunday Show on December 23, anyway. Not only did Donaldson tell "The Tea Party" that they should be gotten "rid of," but it appeared that he was deigning to speak for minorities on top of it. Yes, an old white guy presuming to speak for minorities.

So the key questions becomes what is the proper etiquette for going over the fiscal cliff, do you put your hands up and scream like when riding a roller coaster or do you hold hands and gun the gas pedal like Thelma and Louise? The good news is we have a little more than four days to think about it, the bad news is, today it looks a lot more likely that it will happen.

Video of Harry Reid on the floor of the Senate blasting John Boehner and the rest of the Republican Party over their handling of the Fiscal Cliff negotiations. While disingenuous at best it proves once again a point I made last week which is that in the PR arena the GOP´s marketing sucks!

Charles Durning, the great American character actor, D-Day Survivor/WWII P.O.W, sadly passed on this week. As with all our old familar Hollywood/Broadway friends who have delighted & inspired us through the years, Durning is immortally in his prime on film and record as he offers up Politics as Usual below. There was a time when actors had something substantial to add to our culture because they brought significant life experience to their work. R.I.P., Mr. D.

These four have the same derision for Israel and Jews as Hagel, two have made anti-Semitic statements in public forums and one is largely responsible for the creation of the Taliban...and the progressives use them to make a case for Hagel?

The article also contains a candid photo that caught a group of members of Congress arriving back in Washington from their Christmas vacation.

Years ago, as an evangelical worshipping in a charismatic Episcopal church, I volunteered to be chairman of the church´s outreach committee. I was woefully inadequate and ill-prepared for the job but I was willing which was more than could be said for too many others in that same church. So I volunteered for the job and to my surprise at the time, was accepted.
One of my tasks was to occasionally visit the sick and I particularly remember stopping by the hospital room of an older man whose ailment escapes me now. What I most recall is...

Before heading off to midnight mass on Christmas Eve, the missus and I watched, once again, Frank Capra´s It´s A Wonderful Life. The movie is simply captivating for me and even though I´ve seen it now countless times, each time I enjoy it and Monday night was no exception. There´s just something about the flick I find special so when I stumbled today across this piece by Troy Hinkel, it truly resonated...

The Vodkapundit once said something to the effect of, “To feminists being dependent on a man is not cool. But somehow being dependent on the man became cool?” The better question now is that between Sandra Fluke, The Life of Julia, and that creepy ad about the young woman who wanted to lose her virginity to Obama, how did we get to the point where a middle aged white guy like me is screaming “Keep your laws off of my body!” while these enlightened feminists are purring to the government “Take me, big boy!”

Because this is Marin and I am not a hermit, I frequently find myself in conversation with Democrats. It was to be expected, therefore, that conversation over the Christmas holiday would end up revolving around gun control. These conversations were disheartening on all sides. My friends concluded that I support wild-eyed mass murderers, since I believe in the Second Amendment, and I concluded that their devotion to feelings over facts will result in many unnecessary deaths over the years.

It is Claire´s and my conviction that Christmas is just too big and beautiful to be contained in one day. So though we love December and its many and various anticipations of Christmas, our real celebration starts (not ends) on December 25th. While so many are weighed down by the post-holiday blues, we´re just getting underway! Are you interested in stretching your Christmas out to its fullest? Here are a few suggestions.

On NBC´s Meet The Press over the weekend, David Gregory was quite confrontational with the Vice President of the National Rifle Association over the organization´s idea of putting armed security guards in every school in America. But even as Gregory mocked the NRA for the idea, he seems to see nothing wrong with sending his own kids to a school that has armed security guards each school day.
